Student Loans

pdf Student Financial Aid Guide 2010-11

Stafford Loan
The Stafford Loan is a loan made to the individual student. This type of loan can be either subsidized or unsubsidized. A subsidized loan means that while the student is attending college, the interest on the loan is paid for by the government. An unsubsidized loan means interest will accrue while the student is completing their education. The college student can choose to not make interest payments on the loan while in school; however, the interest is capitalized and is added to the loan amount. Monthly payments begin on both a subsidized and unsubsidized loan six months after graduation.

Whether the loan is subsidized or unsubsidized is determined by the school. The student would receive half the qualified amount prior to the first semester and the other half prior to the second semester of each academic year. Student loan amounts vary based on student status (i.e. freshman, sophomore, junior, senior).

Origination and guarantee fees, from 0 to 3 percent, may be charged on any type of student loan. For more information logon to www.fafsa.ed.gov

Plus Loan
A Plus Loan is a student loan that is taken out by the parents, not the student. This type of loan is for undergraduate school only. The maximum dollar amount is based on cost of education minus any additional financial aid. The parent needs to qualify for the loan and repayment begins immediately.
